Valentine's Day Favorites

by Christen Coppola

I can't believe this is my first "gift guide!" Since many times my gifts come from the Goodwill, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to highlight some of my favorite thrifted and non-thrifted gift finds!

What holiday would be complete with a Steel City Cotton Works tee, amirite, Pittsburgh? I love all the fun Pittsburgh sayings! In fact, they have a "Sidney Crosby is Really Good at Hockey" tee that I basically wear around my house 24/7. Not to mention, lots of non-sports related items that play on the colloquialisms of our dear city. Most tees are around $29.99, and can be purchased on their website or permanent store downtown on Smithfield street! If you haven't been to their pop-up shop turned storefront, you're really missing out. Fellow blogger tip: They have a few photo-friendly set ups inside and outside the shop!

(I just realized as I was posting this that my last blog post from my Doubletree "Staycation" also features this tee - I'm sure you can tell that I like it a little - hehe)

My next favorite item is this ornate silk scarf from Niki Whittle Designs - she's actually doing a cyber sale right this second! Enter code CYBER30 for 30% off your purchase! This scarf is long enough to wear around your neck or as a bag accessory! I'm very obsessed with her designs and I cannot wait to order more from her as gifts and for myself!

Of course, candy and new purses never hurt nobody! Candy Club is a great way to try new candy! Each month of your subscription, Candy Club sends a link to all of their candies for the month. I like chocolate, whereas my husband likes gummies, so we're always both satisfied! For an extra $7, you can also add a 4th box. We've really been loving the selections lately, especially through the holidays! Check them out for your first box for free!!

This thrifted Henri Bendel wallet that I cannot wait to transition into for spring. I don't see many Bendel Bags in Pittsburgh, so anytime I spot one while thrifting, I snatch it up! This one was $22 at Clothes Mentor Bridgeville - easily retailed for over $120. Needless to say, the neutral tone will match my other Bendels flawlessly!

Quay Sunglasses have also quickly become an obsession of mine, once I realized how trendy their pieces were and affordably priced! I take these sunnies with me on nearly every vacation - and I love the "Australian flair!" I love their styles, which are slightly more edgy than some American designs. They can also be found at Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack for a good price!

The cutie dog plate is from the Goodwill, naturally. (Did you really think this post would be void of some thrifted goodies!?) I absolutely LOVE finding fun chotchkies at the Goodwill! I usually pair something fun and thrifted with a store bought item for a unique and customized gift.

For all those moms and moms-to-be out there, my final item is the 3 B's Balm from Inclined Designs Pittsburgh - she has the cutest, most Pittsburgh-y inspired things! I have a feeling that I'll be getting the 3B's balm on auto-replenishment! I've been using it on my growing bump to prevent stretch marks, and I hear that its a great nursing cream and diaper rash healer! You can catch Inclined Designs at the IMadeIt Markets around town, as well as order straight from her Etsy site!

When To Staycation...

by Christen Coppola

So, you have a free weekend coming up with nothing planned.

But last minute flights are expensive, and you'd rather stay close to home.

The solution? A staycation!

I have been bursting at the seams waiting to tell yinz all about our incredibly relaxing staycation at the Doubletree Cranberry! A quick 25 min drive north of the city will give you all the feels of being "out of town." Scroll down to see our fun!

Saturdays are definitely for the pool!

I donut care....

I donut care....

As soon as we checked in, we couldn't get into our bathing suits fast enough to take a dip in the spacious indoor/indoor pool! The lobby bar was serving up some fantastic local brews that we were able to take right outside to the pool deck with us!
Jamie is the IPA drinker, I'm more of a Shandy gal! We both had so many options!

After some much needed pool R&R, Jamie and I headed down to Ember and Vine, the acclaimed restaurant situated in the atrium at the Doubletree. I was downright obsessed with the natural light and open floorplan! We were able to enjoy our cocktails right here in the TV area before dinner. I adore the little tv "Cubbys" where you could lounge, watch a sports game, and have a drink!

Can we talk about this Chef's table tho?

Can we talk about this Chef's table tho?

The chefs at Ember and Vine come from all around the country, love farm to table, and truly enjoy their craft. The menu shows! I had oysters on a half shell as an app - I could've sworn I was at the shore! For my entree, I picked the gnochi, which was on special. Jamie had the filet! I loved the beer/wine recommended pairings for our meals as well. Yummmmm!

One of my favorite things about picking a hotel for any trip is taking into account the hotel restaurant and the nearby eateries. The Doubletree Cranberry hit all of our hotel food must-haves: amazing sit down dinner, lunch, and brunch! I love when a restaurant can take on a full menu throughout the day - it makes planning so much easier. I also loved that I could see right down into the atrium from our room, so we knew exactly when the dinner rush was finishing up and could head right down!

I'd be remiss if I didnt talk about this fabulous Free People dress that I found on clearance at Burlington for $12. The fit and feel of it is beyond perfect. It was a great travel piece to be able to throw on after our pool day!

All the omlette things!

All the omlette things!

Let's talk about brunch. Can you even with this bloody mary bar? And above is me customizing my Made-to-order omelette at Ember & Vine!

Fun fact: Ember & Vine is open to the public daily, and they have a phenomenal brunch with live jazz every Sunday from 11am-2pm! Brunch buffet is only $15/person and includes so many vegan and vegetarian options, as well as non-dairy and gluten free choices!

So, to recap, here are some of my favorite tips and tricks for a budget-friendly staycation!

First, choose an area that's slightly different than where you live. If you're more of a city dweller (like me and Jamie!) then head out of the county. If you're more suburbanite, why not pick a trendy downtown hotel? The change-up with feel more like a vacation.

Second, take some snacks/bottled water/red wine for your room. When you're in between meals or just in the room getting ready, its easier to have your own stash. Plus, red wine doesn't need refrigerated, so its a great tagalong booze. Jamie and I love to splurge on nice dinners and brunch, so saving on a drink here and there really adds up to some cost-savings for us.

Obviously, I'm all about the pool wherever we go, but, plan for your surroundings! Walking trails, large gyms, winery nearby.. . pick what is important to you. It will feel more vacation-y!

And my last tip: Its ok to book last minute! You're driving there, so there's no need to worry about flights. Just be sure to have a couple of hotels in mind in case your first pick isn't available. Look around for package deals - especially last minute, these could really save you some bucks. We love for last minute bookings, but I always suggest calling the hotel directly for their best rate. Be sure to ask for all of their discounts. Some that are available regularly through Hilton: AAA discounts, military discounts, Hilton Honors discounts (like access to rooms on the top floor!), and more that you might not think of!

Right now, the Doubletree Cranberry has the "Dine and Unwind Package" - $174 gets you a deluxe room with a king, and a $50 food or beverage credit! That's like getting over $25 in food or drink for free! They also have a Bed and Breakfast package, which includes free breakfast for two adults. You can even add two children onto the package for an additional $4! That's over $60 in freebies!

So... Where do you Staycation?

Thank you again to the Hilton Doubletree and Ember & Vine restaurant for the top notch food and impecible service! I cannot wait to get back there, especially for that bloody Mary bar!

Doubletree Cranberry 1 night stay and all food/bar spend at Ember & Vine were provided c/o Doubletree Hilton at no cost. I was provided these amenities in exchange for a fair and honest blog review and social media exposure.

Welcome to Miami!

by Christen Coppola

So... any guess on where I was? I mean, other than just being MIA from my blog for a couple months - I'm happy to say that I'm back! Why did I take a blog-break, you ask? Mostly time. My blog is my hobby, so sometimes it falls by the wayside.

But... have you been keeping up with me on instagram? @thriftyyinzer is my personal account where I talk food and dogs and more. @thriftyyinzerstylist is my official styling profile where I highlight the fun finds through thrifting!

Anyway, you're here for a reason.

I was in Miami last week! Yes, it was amazing. Yes, I had a BLAST.

I got to debut my adorable bathing suits that I purchased from RoseGal! This one above is my FAVORITE, and it was less than $15! Can you even?!

All the Art Deco tho. <3

I had the amazing opportunity to check out the Savoy Hotel Miami and their great pool! Did you know that in Miami, once you're tired of the beach, you can purchase a day pass for a number of hotel pools and enjoy all the great hotel amenities for an entire day? Now that you know, the next "must-know" piece of info is that the Savoy Miami is your best pick! For $25/day, you get access to their heated pool, unheated diving salt-water pool, huge spacious lounge area, bar and restaurant, and fitness center (including showers and locker rooms!) This was a refreshing, relaxing spot for our last day in Miami - especially after we checked out of our own hotel, that did not have a pool.

Their location on Ocean drive couldn't be better, either. Right on the beach, they're situated in the 4th block of Ocean drive, a stone's throw from a plethora of restaurants and the park!

WOW - this pool! The foreground pool is the 9ft deep saltwater pool - perfect for diving! We also deemed it the "adult pool" since it was a little too deep and cold for some of the kids on the pool deck :)

The Traveling Pants: Thrifter's Edition.

by Christen Coppola

We all know the story about the traveling pants, right? I mean, I don't, but I pretend to know it based on the title of the book. So, now that we're clear on that, I'll continue talking about pants!

I was at my favorite Goodwill last week - Banksville road location, for those wondering - and I came across a vintage 80's Esprit button up short sleeved top. I loved the pattern and the style, but it was clearly way too big and would require some tailoring. Not my thing.

Queue: Me getting further into the Goodwill, and I come across some vintage 80's pants! Not just any pants, the SAME PATTERN as the top I just saw! Of course, I'm making one of these items work now. It's a sign from the thrifting gods, obviously!

So I picked the pants. And oh how glad I am that I did! I really love bringing back vintage items. Not only are some things back in style, but it's a very green way to be! It's one less item to end up in a landfill and one less thing you'd buy new!

I paired these with my old friend the cashmere hi-lo sweater from Banana Republic that I now own in 4 colors (two of which are from the Goodwill!) And my thrifted necklace. Shoes are repeats, but definitely a fall favorite.
